10TH Annual Greenwood Festival of Discovery

Darek Johnson and I (Jonathan Bouknight) headed to Greenwood, SC with the CU Cruiser for the 10TH Annual Festival of Discovery. This is no small event for South Carolina either. The Food Network has highlighted the festival 3 times over its 10 year run, which has helped rocket attendance and attract food lovers from all over the region to attend the event. I was asked to be a celebrity judge for the "Anything Goes" category in the cooking competition put on by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. I had never done this before and it was a very interesting experience. I got to sample some amazing dishes and learned that there is another taste in addition to saltiness, sourness, sweetness, and bitterness, which is umami. This is how savory something is and in Japanese means "delicious flavor."
The majority of the vendors who make up the Festival of Discovery are BBQ teams from through out the SouthEast who are hoping to take home a championship trophy from the event. There was also other vendors selling things like homemade ice cream which was not only delicious but almost essential while enduring South Carolina's summer heat. A hot dog eating competition was featured on the main stage. Check out the video to see how that turned out!! It wouldn't be a southern food festival without some deep southern blues. Some highlights include Veronika Jackson from Atlanta, GA who has a very traditional style of blues incorporating story telling into the music. Following her was the legendary Drink Small who has been recording music since 1956 and has a similar approach to the blues. Headlining the event was Charlie Sayles and the Blues Disciples who are featured in the video. They were more into jamming than story telling with Charlie Sayles wailing on his harmonica while the rest of the band would go into impromptu solos until they all felt it was time to end.
This event was a success for the CU Cru as well. We collected hundreds of surveys, found members who love their credit union, and was able to enlighten many people who didn't know about the benefits credit unions have over banks. While talking to local residents of Greenwood we learned some history of the town. One man told us about how a major railroad use to run through the center of downtown, which is also the widest main street in America. We will definitely look forward to attending next year's Festival of Discovery in Greenwood, SC.
